A reinterpretation of the French Neoclassical painter, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, The Valpincon Bather which is in the Louvre.

In this vibrant painting I used washes of coffee to create a textured and highly unusual background. This combined with the strong gestural ink marks, creates an intriguing contrast. Coffee is a wonderful medium to work with, creating fabulous marks and textures.

I am interested in reworking well known classical poses and figures from paintings and sculptures in alternative media. By depicting them in an alternative way, there is a moment of doubt before recognition. Ingres did this himself by using the same model and pose in several different paintings.
